In India, the festival of lights takes place during the end of October and beginning of November. It is a time to recognize the light within and power over darkness.
The lighting of lamps signifies the dispelling of darkness (ignorance) through the spread of light (awareness). It is tradition to give your home a good spring cleaning, and decorate front entrance with floral wreaths to welcome and recognize the divine within.
This festival is celebrated to increase the "sattvikta" in us as well as society - meaning a sense of confidence, peace, harmony and intuition.
As we approach the holiday of Thanksgiving in America, why not prepare for the blessings you have. Create a festival of lights in your own home. Give it a good cleaning, remove what no longer serves you well and remind yourself of the Power of Divinity that Shapes Our Lives!
If you are a Yogi, engaging in Sun Salutations is a perfect way to stoke the flame within. It brings sanctity to your practice. Moving through Surya Namaskar is a way to salute not only the sun that sustains all life form, but also honors your inner light.
