Mindful Meditation Mondays!
Block Island
Welcome to Mindful Meditation Mondays! Cultivating mindfulness is the key to overcoming self imposed suffering. One of the best ways to nurture mindfulness is to sit in meditation. There are many different kinds of meditation to quiet the mind and body to produce and altered state of consciousness.
Mindful meditation is not about changing who we are but to become aware of what is already true. It's about being unconditionally present no matter what is happening around us. Mindful meditation helps us to go deeper within ourselves just as we are. By doing this we can get a glimpse of our inherent wisdom so we can stop beating ourselves up and continue suffering. Paying precise, nonjudgmental attention to ur experiences as they arise - the good with the bad, is the secret. We are not trying to hold onto the pleasurable things and avoid the painful. It's about practicing to be with these experiences equally.
When we are mindful we show up for our lives not be distracted by changing what is. So how can we be mindful in our meditation? There are three areas to take into consideration: the body, breath and mind. In short, the body is about how we set up our physical environment including the food we eat, the home and workplace, exercise, and people we surround ourselves with. Once these layers are balanced, then we can hone in on the meditation stage including the area we will sit and taking correct posture. Once we are stable in posture, the focus naturally falls to the breath. Simply being aware of the inhalation and the exhalation has a powerful impact in calming the mind. The quiet mind makes room to delve into the deeper layers where innate wisdom is revealed.

Feel Your Yoga Fridays!
Olympic National Park
Welcome to "Feel Your Yoga Fridays." Several years ago, my husband and I took a trip to the Pacific Northwest. We did a great deal of hiking throughout Olympic National Park. During one of our excursions, I decided to pull off my hiking gear and stand on this rock ledge to experience peaceful warrior. I wasn't too concerned with perfect alignment, but rather to experience the warrior within standing on a ledge that was high enough to be in the mist of clouds.
When we think about (Virabhadrasana), it is a name given to the mythical warrior Virabhadra. One of the main bases of yoga is non-violence so why do we practice a pose named after a warrior? The significance of this pose is that it shifts our attention to the fact that the real battle is the battle within us – our struggle with self-ignorance, false perceptions and distracted mind.

Willful Meditation Wednesday!
Today, let's begin our meditation with willful breathing. The inquiry is: "How fully can I inhale; " and "How completely can I exhale. " Repeat this inquiry for several minutes and then fully relax. Feel the breath being free and effortless. Select an anchor in your mind to bring yourself back to the hear and now. Explore the sounds perhaps from the vibration of your breath as your anchor. Whatever your anchor is, know it will bring you back to the present moment. Try to experience your breath on the inside of your being. Visualize with every breath the heart being embraced and nurtured. Take that sensation of being nurtured deeper into your meditation. Let it flow out from heart center. Keep the focus around the heart and notice the sensations that may arise and then freely release those sensations. Stay with this willful breathing for at least 15 minutes before going about your day.
