Meditation ~ Getting Quiet

Meditation is very difficult.  To quiet the mind for even a few seconds is challenging let alone for 30 minutes. So why even do it? Meditation is not only a healthy practice but an access point to our higher self where we can access guidance from our spirit guides.  Sounds like a worthwhile practice to me.

Where to begin:

The best way to begin meditating it to commit to a few minutes a day, preferable in the morning, to sit and just be silent. Your mind will begin to race but just try to acknowledge the thoughts that float in and allow them to pass. It’s helpful to use your breath to move pass these active thoughts. The louder the breath the better, as the sound becomes a mantra for your focus.

Comfort:

Make sure you do whatever it takes to be comfortable in your meditation.  An erect spine and open chest is best for effective meditation.  However, this is easier said than done.  It’s not easy to sit in an erect position without some part of your body beginning to speak up.  Following these simple tips on staying comfortable will go a long way for your meditation practice.

  • Use props to support your hips, low back, knees or whatever area you need assistance with.
  • Make sure your hips are at least 3 inches higher than your knees.
  • Sit in a chair if the floor is too difficult.
  • Prop your back against a wall to maintain posture.

The important thing here is to do what it takes to be comfortable so your focus is on the breath and meditation rather than an uncomfortable hip, back or knee.  Whatever prop you choose just stick to a routine so you develop a habit for a meditation practice.

Now that you are in the rhythm of the cosmos with your meditation, try dancing to the beat with dancer's pose. Click here to see full video description of this pose!

Strong Spine for Flexibility

Strong Spine for Flexibility

Tip of the Day: If it doesn't challenge you it doesn't change you...

Everything you do depends on the strength and flexibility of your spine. In order to move through a wide range of motion on a daily basis your spine needs to be strong and flexible. The bottom line is that some point in our lives, we are bound to experience back pain. Here are a few yoga poses to help strengthen your back.

  • Seated Spinal Twists
  • Windshield Wiper Twists
  • Plank Pose
  • Down Dog
  • High Lunge
  • Plank Pose with a Twist
  • Goddess Pose with a Twist
  • Wide-Legged Standing Forward Bend
  • Pyramid Pose
  • Twisting Triangle
  • Happy Baby Pose
  • Reclining Spinal Twist
  • Corpse Pose
Practicing anyone of these poses or string them in a sequence and you'll find it to be beneficial. Make sure you breathe deeply while performing each pose especially those that include twisting motion. You'll want to practice the above poses at least every other day to give your back the self-care and self-love it needs and deserves.

Here's to a strong and flexible spine!

What Are You Resisting Most?

What Are You Resisting Most?

Olympic National Park - 2011

What are you resisting most is the question for today? What matters is to be open to the whole journey and not just parts of it. In your yoga practice today, explore if there is a feeling, a person, a thought, a project that you have been avoiding. Is there something you are refusing to deal with, something you are resisting. Ignore the voice that is resisting and be open to everything. Your greatest lesson may come from those things you are resisting the most.

Yoga Practice Suggestions:

Try long deep hip openers like lizard or pigeon pose. Stay in the pose for at least 5 full minutes and resist the urge to release from the pose. See what comes us when you ask yourself the question; "What am I resisting most?"

August 2017: Take a Trip!

Welcome to BSA - The Conscious Alignment of Energy
It's hard to believe we are already in the month of August. The depth of  summer has taken hold, the element of fire is losing energy, while the transition element of earth is getting ready to rise over the next month.  August is a popular month to take a trip. Is there someplace you'd like to travel to? Do you have time off from work,  time that you can use creatively? Do you have a long weekend coming up?How would you like to spend that? Vacations and trips are important , as they give us a chance to get away, see someplace new, rest, and refresh our spirits. Trips often synchronize with growth and change in our lives. A trip can correlate with a new direction on our journey in spiritual growth. Many times when we feel the urge to travel, it is connected to a deeper urge, the urge to go somewhere new on our path. This month be creative with your free time and delve deeper on the your journey from the inside out.

Happy August!

Partnering Energy:
The trigram 2 Kun is the central star for the month of August. This star represents partnerships and romantic relationships. It has a receptive quality that goes beyond oneself. The grounding impact of this star is cultivated by the element of earth.  To get a better sense of this element, spend some time walking barefoot on Gaia (Mother Earth).

The matriarch is mostly impacted by this trigram; therefore, it behooves older females to look to enhance partnerships or romantic relationships this month. The intestinal system can be more vulnerable with this star, so be mindful of your diet and especially when dining out.

The energy of " two" reminds us to work together  and to give beyond what you normally would.

Points to Perk Up:

Southwest:
This is the actual home of the trigram 2 Kun. As luck would have it, another earth star moves into this direction, but not just any earth star, it is the mother of all stars and especially when it comes to financial gains in real estate. My suggestion is to place strong fire in the southwest this month, and especially fire that has movement such as a plug-in incense burner!

Northwest:  Any new business ideas? If so, cultivate input from networking with those in the industry you are looking to make your mark. Add virtual water element to the northwest and make that connection between helpful people/mentors, and your new business venture.

South: By enhancing the northwest energy mentioned above, you will naturally move to a leadership role that will catapult your goals to a successful outcome. Add a strong earth element to the south direction such as a crystal stone and solidify your intended mission.

Align with Nature to Align with Yourself!
When we turn our attention toward nature, we become more closely aligned with it. We remember that we too are nature, and then we begin to see that there are parallels between what we see around us  and our own experiences. We begin to notice how our energy patterns rise and fall with the weather and the seasons. Take a look at my video and feel the power of the wind and water through the ebb and flow of the ocean waves. Recognizing our connectivity to nature is a step toward becoming more attuned to our environment and to ourselves. This is the way to live more aware and harmonious lives.
